Assess the building and heating system before comparing equipment prices. Use the same assumptions for every offer and verify the latest terms directly.
Begin with a building assessment
Heat demand, insulation and the existing heating system influence whether a proposed installation is suitable. Ask a qualified assessor or installer to explain the design assumptions for your particular home. A quote based only on floor area may leave important questions unanswered.
Ask about the whole system
Equipment is only one part of the installation. Review hot-water storage, radiators or underfloor heating, controls, electrical works and the location of outdoor equipment. Ask which changes are essential and which are optional.
Compare running-cost assumptions
A proposal should explain projected electricity consumption and the efficiency assumption used. Calculate the estimate with a tariff you can actually access. Compare like-for-like comfort and hot-water needs rather than assuming the old and new systems run identically.
Check support directly
SEAI sets out home energy upgrade routes and grants. Review the route and requirements that apply to your project before work starts. Confirm who manages the application and what the quote assumes about grant approval.
Prepare for commissioning and aftercare
Ask how the installer will test, configure and explain the system. Review servicing, warranty terms and any maintenance commitments. Keep the design, settings and handover documents so future support can understand the installation.
